Fireworks and Pets: Tips for Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, but it can also be a stressful and dangerous time for pets. Loud fireworks and crowded events can cause anxiety and fear in animals, leading them to run away or become injured. Additionally, holiday foods and summer heat can pose health risks to pets. It's important to take steps to ensure your furry friends stay safe during and after the festivities, whether you're hosting your own celebration or simply enjoying the holiday with your pets at home.

Preparing in advance:

As fireworks can be stressful for pets, it's important to take precautions to keep them safe. Ensure that your cats and dogs have identification tags with up-to-date information, and consider micro-chipping them if they aren't already. Additionally, take a current photo of all your pets in case they become lost. For horses, you may even consider writing your contact information on their hooves. If your pet has a history of anxiety during fireworks, consider behavioral therapy or supplements like Adaptil Pheromones, CBD Calm Supplements, Calm Probiotics, or Thunder Shirt. Consult with your veterinarian or behaviorist at Legend Acres to learn more. Make sure your environment is safe and secure, and evaluate your options to choose the safest area for your animals.

Safety during July 4th celebrations:

As much as we love our furry friends, it's important to keep them safe during fireworks displays, parties, and other gatherings. Loud noises and unfamiliar surroundings can be scary for pets, and there's a risk of them running away. To prevent this, consider leaving your pets at home in a safe, escape-proof room or crate. If you're hosting guests, ask them to keep an eye on your pets and place notes on exit doors and gates to remain vigilant. Keep horses and livestock in safely fenced areas away from the noise. Also, keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, and other potentially harmful items away from curious pets. During hot weather, make sure your pets have access to shade and plenty of water, and never leave them in a hot car. If you're traveling, consider leaving your pets with a pet sitter or boarding them in a kennel. And remember to follow safe food handling practices to protect your family and guests.

After the celebrations:

It's important to keep your pets safe during fireworks season. Before letting them outside to play or relax, make sure to check your yard for any debris from fireworks. Even if you didn't set off any fireworks yourself, debris can still end up in your yard and curious animals may pick it up to play with or eat. If you have horses or livestock, be sure to check your pastures and remove any debris to keep them safe. Additionally, if you hosted guests, make sure to check both your yard and home for any food scraps or other debris that could be dangerous to pets, such as food skewers.
