How to stop Dog Barking

Is Your Dog Barking ? Try These Tips
Dogs bark for a variety of reasons. They might be excited, scared, territorial, or lack socialization with people. Whatever the reason, the habit can be annoying, and the behavior can be managed.

Try these training tips to help your dog stop barking and watch their behavior change:
  1. Ignore the behavior. You do not want to reward your dog with attention when they are misbehaving. Practice by having someone you know act as the stranger and tell them to avoid eye contact and not to give the dog any attention, once they settle down, they can be rewarded with a treat.
  2. Walk away. Show the dog they don’t get to greet the person if they are barking. Turn around and walk in the other direction so they understand that barking doesn’t result in a reward.  If your dog is barking at you get up and walk into a different room.  Once your dog is quite for 3-5 seconds reward using a "quiet cue"
  3. Disengage Method. When the dog starts barking, disengage them with a Touch or Seeking Cue. Once you get the dog’s attention and they stop barking, reward them with a treat.
  4. Sit and remain calm. Once you’ve done the work on barking, it’s important to train them on the correct way to meet someone new. Use a friend again to practice. Have them approach you and command your dog to sit. Reward them if they are able to remain calm and seated during this. They will start to realize that is the desired behavior.

If your dog is not responding to any of the techniques above or will not let anyone get near them or continues to bark and lunge do not put the dog in an uncomfortable situation.  Contact Legend Acres and get enrolled in one of our Behavior Modification Workshops or Private Behavior Modification Sessions.
