At Legend Acres, we’re often asked:

“Should I wait until my puppy is fully vaccinated to begin training or socialization?”

According to leading veterinary behaviorists and current research, the answer is a clear and science-backed: No!
In fact, waiting too long can have lifelong behavioral consequences for your puppy.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) states in its official position paper that the most important period for puppy socialization is between 3 and 14 weeks of age—often called the Critical Socialization Period.
Missing this window means missing your puppy’s natural ability to learn about the world without fear—and that gap can lead to anxiety, aggression, and poor confidence in adulthood.

Puppy Development Stages & the Socialization Sweet Spot

Understanding your puppy’s neurological and behavioral development is key to knowing why early socialization matters.

AgeDevelopmental StageKey Milestones
0–2 weeksNeonatalEyes and ears closed, dependent on mother
2–4 weeksTransitionalEyes/ears open, first exposure to environment
3–5 weeksAwarenessBegins responding to stimuli, siblings, people
5–14 weeksCritical Socialization PeriodMost important time for exposure to new stimuli, dogs, people, environments
8–12 weeksFear Imprint PeriodNegative experiences can leave lasting trauma
14–16+ weeksJuvenileBegins reinforcing learned experiences, harder to change behavior patterns

During this time, puppies are neurologically open to forming positive associations with unfamiliar experiences. When exposed safely and positively, they’re more likely to become well-adjusted adult dogs. When deprived of these early interactions, fear-based behaviors are much more likely to emerge.

What About Vaccines? Can My Puppy Start Training Before They’re Fully Vaccinated?

Yes—with the right precautions in place. The AVSAB states:

“In general, puppies can start puppy socialization classes as early as 7–8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class.”
AVSAB Position Statement on Puppy Socialization (AVSAB.org, 2008)

At Legend Acres, we follow this protocol:

✅ Puppies must have received at least one distemper/parvo vaccination
✅ Must have received one deworming treatment
✅ Must be free of all signs of disease (e.g., coughing, vomiting, diarrhea)
✅ Vaccines and deworming must be administered a minimum of 7 days prior to class

How Legend Acres Ensures a Safe Training Environment for Young Puppies

We understand the concerns about disease transmission in group settings. That’s why Legend Acres goes above and beyond standard safety practices to protect our students—even the smallest ones.

Artificial Turf in Both AZ & TN — Maintained by Legend Acres

Our puppy training programs are held exclusively on artificial turf in both our Wittmann, Arizona and Tennessee locations. This isn’t just any turf—it’s strategically chosen and professionally maintained by Legend Acres to ensure a clean and controlled training environment.

  • In Wittmann, AZ, turf space is used only for training classesnot for daycare or boarding—minimizing contamination risk.

  • In Tennessee, the turf training area is located at a veterinary facility, but is not used by hospitalized dogs, ensuring a separate and safe training environment for healthy puppies.

Across both states, Legend Acres manages and maintains the turf, including daily cleaning, monitoring, and sanitizing protocols to provide a clean slate for every training session.

BioFill™ Infill Turf: Natural Antimicrobial Protection

Our turf features BioFill™ infill, made from natural coconut husks and cork, known for its ability to resist bacterial growth and odor. This organic material keeps our training surface cool, dry, and safer for your puppy’s sensitive paws and immune system.

Sanitization with Wysiwash™ Sanitizing System

Legend Acres uses the Wysiwash Sanitizing System, a veterinary-safe, EPA-approved solution that kills 99.999% of viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
Wysiwash is highly effective against canine parvovirus, coronavirus, bordetella, giardia, and other disease-causing pathogens.

This system is used to disinfect the turf before and after every class, ensuring consistent sanitation that protects even the most vulnerable puppies.

☀️ Sunlight as a Natural Disinfectant

All Legend Acres turf spaces receive direct exposure to Arizona and Tennessee sunlight, which acts as a natural UV sanitizing agent.

UV radiation from the sun is scientifically proven to inactivate viruses and bacteria, including parvovirus, when surfaces are exposed long enough in outdoor environments.
